Frequently Asked Questions about travelling Ireland in a Motorhome or Campervan
Below we list some of the most frequently asked questions about travelling Ireland in a motorhome or campervan. We are constantly adding to this section so do check back often.
Is Ireland good for motorhome and campervan trips?
Yes. Compact distances, epic coastal scenery, historic towns, and welcoming pubs make Ireland a top road‑trip destination for motorhomes and campervans.
Do I have to do the Wild Atlantic Way?
No. The WAW is iconic, but there are many quieter, equally stunning options: the Causeway Coastal Route (NI), Connemara & Mayo loops, Ireland’s Ancient East (Kilkenny, Waterford, Wicklow), the Hidden Heartlands/Shannon, and West Cork’s Beara/Sheep’s Head/Mizen peninsulas.
Where are the best motorhome routes in Ireland?
Classics: Wild Atlantic Way sections (Donegal, Connemara, Clare, Kerry, West Cork), Causeway Coastal Route.
Hidden gems: Beara Peninsula, Copper Coast, Mourne Mountains & Strangford (NI), Lough Key & the Shannon, Achill Island. Tip: Our themed routes (Live Music & Craic; Barks & Parks; Paws & Claws etc.. ) b
Can I wild camp/park overnight in a motorhome?
Often tolerated where no “No Overnight Parking/Camping” signs exist, but it’s not a legal right. Councils and landowners set by‑laws; you may be asked to move on. Be discreet (arrive late/leave early, no awnings/chairs), self‑contained, and leave no trace. However, wild parking is very popular in Ireland, indeed it’s one of the attractions particularly away from the tourist hotspots.
Are there motorhome service points and campsites?
Yes. You’ll find campsites and some aires‑style stopovers, plus business‑hosted schemes like Safe Nights Ireland (ROI). Use apps like Park4Night to locate water, waste, and EHU or we recommend locally developed Ireland’s Ultimate Road Trip App
What are the rules on the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland?
It’s an open land border for vehicles; you can drive through without stopping. Currency changes (euro ↔ pound) and speed units change (km/h in ROI, mph in NI). Obey local parking by‑laws in each jurisdiction.
What about pet travel rules (dogs/cats)?
If entering the Republic of Ireland from Great Britain you generally need microchip, valid rabies vaccination (21+ days), an Animal Health Certificate or EU Pet Passport, and tapeworm treatment for dogs within 1–5 days before arrival. Paper checks are rare at the border with NI, but you must be compliant. Always confirm current rules with DAFM (ROI) and DAERA (NI). Our blog pet section covers this extensively.
What’s the best time to visit?
May–June and September for long days and fewer crowds. July–August are busiest—book ahead. Winter can be magical but many sites reduce services.
How do tolls work (M50, etc.)?
ROI: Several motorways have tolls; most take card/cash. Dublin’s M50 uses barrier‑free eFlow—pay online/by app by 8 pm next day to avoid penalties. NI: No tolled roads.
What are typical speed limits?
ROI (vehicles ≤3.5t): 50 km/h urban, 80 km/h regional roads, 100 km/h national roads, 120 km/h motorways. NI: 30 mph urban, 60 mph single carriageway, 70 mph dual/motorway (check vehicle class and local signage).
Is city parking easy (Dublin, Galway, Belfast)?
Not really. Use park‑and‑ride or train/bus from outer parking or campsites (e.g., Salthill for Galway; Bray/Greystones for Dublin; outer car parks for Belfast). Watch for height barriers and “no overnighting” signs. I personally recommend going elsewhere rather than the big cities. Belfast does allow some parking. Check out our Patreon account for details of city parking
How narrow are rural roads?
Some scenic lanes are single‑track with passing places. Drive slowly, avoid soft verges, and plan routes that suit your vehicle size. Generally try & avoid L roads where possible & research best direction of travel (notified in our routes) to avoid meeting coaches head on. Expect tractors & allow much more time than Google maps tells you. Your route may not look far but you’ll be travelling at Irelands pace. Never be in a rush. Savour your journey.
Can I stay at pubs?
Often yes with permission—buy a meal/drinks and park considerately. Some pubs offer low‑cost park‑ups; etiquette matters. Our routes include tried‑and‑tested pub stops.
Where do I empty waste and refill water?
Campsites, designated service points and some public facilities. Never discharge grey/black water outside proper points. Bins can be scarce in ROI. Use local dumps & pay to dispose of rubbish or if you find bins keep rubbish disposal small & often.
Is LPG/autogas available?
Autogas is limited across Ireland and NI. Many travellers rely on exchangeable cylinders (Calor/Flogas); bring the right regulators/adapters. If using refillable systems, plan fills in advance. Check out our blog on gas in Ireland
Do I need special insurance or breakdown cover?
Carry proof of insurance and ensure you’re covered for both ROI and NI. EU breakdown cover (or equivalent) is strongly recommended. Check medical/travel insurance too.
Are generators allowed?
Use sparingly and respectfully—many sites prohibit or restrict them. Consider solar and good battery management instead.
What about ferries to Ireland with a motorhome?
Multiple routes from GB (e.g., Cairnryan–Belfast/Larne, Holyhead–Dublin, Fishguard/Pembroke–Rosslare, Liverpool–Dublin) and France (to Dublin/Rosslare). Declare vehicle dimensions, gas bottles, and pets when booking.
Is it safe to leave a motorhome unattended?
Generally yes, but use common sense: don’t leave valuables visible, choose well‑lit or official sites, and lock up.
Do I need to book campsites in advance?
Highly recommended in summer, on bank holidays, and near major attractions (Cliffs of Moher, Dingle, Giant’s Causeway). Outside peak season you’ll have more flexibility.
Can I drink and drive the next day after a night out?
Ireland has strict limits; pace yourself and consider a rest day. Our Live Music & Craic route builds in short drives and walkable evenings so you can enjoy the trad scene safely.
